Vintage grocery store Vogt Bros. IGA in Steinbach. Wouldn't it be great if we could still buy groceries at those prices? Think again. This add is from 1970 when minimum wage was 95 cents an hour. So it took a person 45 minutes of wages to buy a pound of butter at 69 cents a pound. As of April 1st 2022. minimum wage is $13.70 an hour. So, you'd make $10.80 in 45 minutes of work (at minimum wage). A pound of butter today is $4.99. So you can buy 2 pounds of butter today for the same amount of work. You could even do much better if you're a Mennonite and just make your own and it would be even cheaper than "store bought". The good 'ol days :-)
