Today we finally reveal Groosemame’s Christmas ham recipe that has been kept a secret for more than 3 generations! It is said that the secret procedure makes it the juiciest ham you’ll ever make!
Take one ham. Cut in two pieces. Blend the following: 7 cups water, 6 cloves, 8 star anise, 7 tbsp honey. Place both pieces of ham in two baking dishes and divide mixture between both. Bake in moderate oven for at least 10-12 hours and baste occasionally. That’s it!
So what was the big secret? It had always been suggested that the reason that grandmother Doerksen’s ham was so juicy was because it was cut in half and baked in 2 pieces. And so generations have prepared the Christmas ham with this secret procedure.
At one of our Christmas gatherings, we asked Groosemame, how she figured out that baking the ham in 2 pieces was the secret to keeping the ham juicy. She looked at us confused. So we asked again, why she always cut the ham in 2 pieces. She replied, “because I didn’t have a roaster big enough for the whole ham but I had 2 small roasters”. And there you have it! The “secret” Groosemame Christmas ham recipe that became a legend!

I love this site!!…was born in Steinbach, grew up in Winnipeg, but had lots of relatives there. I got my Mennonite Treasury when I got married in 1965..needless to say it’s been well used and we decided it is now a family heirloom..
