History traces the origins of the name Penner to a very colorful family lineage in east Prussia (Ostpreußen) in the year 1732. The Penners were predominantly families who ventured into various businesses, unlike their many fellow Mennonites of the time who chose farming as a livelihood. These Penners strived to set themselves apart from other merchants in the area of Konigsberg, so they began to dress in upscale flashy apparel and carried themselves in a posture that commanded reverence from those whom they dealt with in their daily business. Hence, their family name was derived from the Dutch-Germanic term Pfenner; to flaunt with bright showy colors, to boldly strut like a peacock.
