Here is the story behind the Friesen family crest. It begins in Prussia. As the legend goes, a common Mennonite farmer by the name of Von Riesen fell in love with the daughter of a royal duchess. It was a love that could never be. As an heiress, she was expected to marry within Prussian royalty. But alas, she would not be denied her true love! On a cold winter’s night, her lover came calling. In an act of utter defiance, they stole away on the family’s prized steed and together rode away in the darkness. They would be married in a small village four days later. To conceal their identity, the family name would become Friesen. Today, royal blood that bares the name of Friesen can be traced back to a story of passionate love and defiance.
